Five years after the worst oil spill in U.S. history, the federal case determining how much BP has to pay for its negligence at Deepwater Horizon is coming to a close. In advance of the final decision, 91做厙s President and CEO David Yarnold lays out what the oil giant owes to the Gulf Coast in an op-ed published in Roll Call.
Yarnold writes:
Its time to hold BP accountable for the environmental damage it continues to cause the wildlife and people of the Gulf Coast. The Gulf Coasts way of life is a rich stew, a place thats uniquely American, where drilling and shrimping go hand-in-hand. But we also know whether youre talking about a curfew for your kids or creating a safe construction site, there have to be consequences when rules are blatantly ignored. Americas laws acknowledge that deep sea drilling is risky business that requires extraordinary safety measures and thats why there are penalties for lawbreakers.
